Bay & Basin Community Radio 92.7FM (2BAB)
Around 30 years ago there was a real gap in community services and supports in the Bay and Basin region of the Shoalhaven in NSW, especially for young people.
In 1989, a group of concerned local residents went to the Shoalhaven City Council to try and find a solution for the gap in community services. From that initial meeting the Bay & Basin Community Resources (BBCR) Committee was formed.
The first goal for the Committee was to work with Council to build the Sanctuary Point Youth and Community Centre. The Centre was opened in 1991 and for over 30 years it has been a gathering place for all ages, and has held countless activities, events, workshops and social groups. It is a safe and welcoming Community space creating many happy memories over the years.
Engaging our Youth
Bay & Basin Community Radio was first formed as an activity for local young people. In 2001, we did a number of test broadcasts using the narrowcast frequency of 87.6 MHz (Boodooree LPON). The station was then launched on 92.7FM with a temporary license in November 2002.
Over the next three years we focussed on providing a unique broadcasting service so locals could keep connected and up-to-date with what was happening in their own community. We also obtained the necessary compliance requirements to apply for a Community radio permanent license with the Australian Communication and Media Authority (ACMA).
In June 2006 we obtained our first 5 year permanent broadcasting license. This was a testament to the hard work and efforts of the staff and volunteers who tirelessly worked on building up the station’s capacity.
Over the last 20 years Bay & Basin 92.7FM has continued to grow and with the support of the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia, Community Broadcasting Foundation, Bay & Basin Community Resources and our committed staff and team of over 35 volunteers, we are very proud to have built up a radio station that is uniquely local, offers an alternative to mainstream media and gives our community a voice.
The heart and soul of BBCR 92.7fm are our amazing volunteers who give their time, skills and experience to keep our community informed, entertained and connected!
